Seaside cities have lighthouses to guide ships safely ashore. Now, San Antonio has a tower to lure travelers into a port of sorts.
VIA unveiled Centro Chroma Tower yesterday at Centro Plaza, the transit hub just west of Downtown near the corner of Houston and Frio streets. Centro Chroma Tower is an 85-foot light tower designed by local artist Bill FitzGibbons. FitzGibbons' other public works include Kinetic Skyline, a recent light piece at the Bank of America building Downtown.
Centro Chroma Tower has a multi-colored glow from its LED lights, which can be synced up with the plaza's lanterns to create a "rhythm of light." Its made of structural steel and perforated metal. The tower will serve as a landmark for the district, and help people find their way to Centro Plaza.
