Details are scarce, but we know this so far: Cappy's (5011 Broadway) and Cappycino's (5003 Broadway), two beloved Alamo Heights institutions, will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to an early morning fire. Crews were out at 8:45 a.m. trying to put out the scorcher, which engulfed Cappy's kitchen. This puts a hard stop on production for both eateries as all food was stored in Cappy's kitchen, which opened in 1977.
Chef Gabe Ibarra, who helms the kitchens and directs the madness of their weekend brunch, was on vacation when the fire broke out.
"I was out jogging and I told the guys not to call me unless the place was on fire," Ibarra said. Thankfully, the kitchen staff that was busy prepping for the day's service was able to clear out of the building, which was originally built in the 1930s. No one was hurt.
We'll keep you posted on more details as they're released.
