While I may feel a collective hangover covering the cocktail scene, the folks behind the San Antonio Cocktail Conference
are deep into planning the fifth installment. The boozy conference, which packs in classes, seminars, a fabulous tasting room and a slew of over-the-top parties, is already slated for January 14-17, 2016, and they've already released the signature cocktail.
The Beso de Agave, which debuted during a media and friends event this past Thursday, closely follows the agave wave San Antonio is riding. The drink is served in a Collins glass and includes Milagro Reposado, Montelobos mezcal, pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, splash of ginger beer, Ancho Reyes floater and a mint sprig for garnish. It's boozy; it's refreshing; it's a golden hue, and it'll definitely be a hit during next year's conference.
All things mezcal and tequila will be celebrated early on during the SACC's A Walk Through Mexico on Saturday, September 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Held behind The Monterey at 1119 S. St. Mary's St., the event will feature Mexican street food, with bites from The Monterey, Toro Taco Bar, El Mirador, Hot Joy, Los Barrios and Mixtli and tequilas y mezcales from Jalisco, Michoacan and Oaxaca as poured by actual mezcaleros.
The spirit, which involves a lengthy distilling process using various species of agave over the course of decades, has taken the U.S. by storm. You can learn more about why mezcal is amazing (no, really, I'm a huge fan) and why you should learn its rich history during A Walk Through Mexico
. Tickets for the event, $68 per person, are available through saccevents.org.
