Remember back when Restaurant Gwendolyn
served one of the best lunches in the city?
Well, chef Michael Sohocki and staff are bringing back lunch for a short time with a burger pop-up only they could throw. Through August 12, Gwendolyn will host “Flat Top Pop Up” with beef and veggie burgers priced at $10 to $13 with French fries and a drink.
But this being Gwendolyn, these aren’t ordinary burgers. Instead the pop-up will feature patties made with 30-day dry-aged beef, pork fat, caramelized onions and slow-roasted garlic, while the veggie burger options include a black bean patty or a mushroom patty.
My recent visit on Tuesday (shout-out to Express-News
food and drinks editor, Ed Tijerina
, who was also there for lunch) went swimmingly. Fresh out of buns for the day, Sohocki and staff resorted to buttered Texas Toast so no complaints there. No menus were presented, our server simply asked our choice of beef, pork or mushroom burger. The fixin's were fresh, and accompanying house-made mustard seeds, garlic aioli and coriander ketchup were a great, Gwendolyn-esque touch. My beef burger was as messy as any burger should be, but I would have liked a nice flat-top sear on the patty. Even so, there will be return visits.
