Director Hayao Miyazaki’s films often explore humanity’s relationship to nature and technology. While most will associate Miyazaki’s name with 1997’s Princess Mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a fascinating example of his early work. Set 1,000 years after the “Seven Days of Fire,” an event that destroyed Earth’s ecosystem, the film follows Nausicaä, a peace-loving princess with the ability to communicate with the mutated creatures living in the Sea of Decay. When she isn’t “windriding,” or chatting with the enormous, armored caterpillars of the toxic jungle, Nausicaä conducts biological experiments, which will hopefully help her establish a plan for world peace and universal detoxification.
