They call it an act
Sonya Harvey
Ray Hastings’ alter ego Ray Elvis is a hunka hunka burnin’ love.

Some people think of Elvis Presley as the young, hip-shakin’ rebel who made Ed Sullivan blush and thousands of young women go mad in a Dionysian frenzy, while others only remember the deceased, drug- addicted superstar found face down on a shag rug in front of his toilet.

Some people are just too young to remember Elvis, but they may have heard of El Vez, the campy, comedic Mexican Elvis impersonator. To San Antonio resident Ray Hastings, though, Elvis is no laughing matter. Hastings, also known as RayElvis to his fans, can be found performing some of the King’s greatest hits on any given night at Dad’s Karaoke, a local hangout where wannabe singers flock to the stage in droves.

Partial to the tuneful ballads and the spirited gospel music Elvis was so fond of, Hastings, dressed in a black, studded Apache jumpsuit, performed Elvis’s hit songs “C.C. Rider” and “It’s Now or Never” to a packed house.

“When you put on the jumpsuit, you’re going to get a lot of stares, but you really feel his persona,” Hastings said. He has the moves, the jokes, the mannerisms, the hair, several custom-made costumes, the signature sideburns, and even wears sunglasses no matter what time of day — or night — it is, and everybody loves him.

Hastings is a bona-fide 1970s-Elvis tribute artist who prides himself on his singing abilities — and when he sings, women pay attention. They request their favorite songs, ask for his autograph, and want their pictures taken with him. He plays the part so well that he often throws his custom silk scarves into the audience and kisses old ladies on the cheek.

Hastings is such an avid Elvis fan he even has a room in his house dedicated to the King, filled with the usual memorabilia, everything from ornaments, collector plates, and a clock with dancing feet to original records he had mounted and framed, much like the gold records found in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has, of course, been to Graceland and spent time on Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis.

Known as San Antonio’s only Elvis impersonator, Hastings has been appearing as Elvis in public for about seven years, ever since he won $1,000 in a karaoke contest for his rendition of “It’s Now or Never.” Since then, he has performed at parties, reunions, retirement homes, and the occasional wedding. “That’s one of my favorite things — entertaining older people,” Hastings said. “They were alive when he was and I love the joy it brings to them. It is really satisfying.”

Although he doesn’t perform full-time (he does have a day job), Hastings enters local contests every year and has, on several occasions, placed first. He has even been to the Las Vegas Nationals where he placed third. Dick’s Last Resort hosts two Elvis karaoke contests each year, one on January 8, Elvis’s birthday, and of course, one on August 16, the day he died. Hastings has won first place almost every year and may very well be the “King” of the Dick’s Last Resort karaoke contest.

In addition to local contests, the Elvis Extravaganza Fan Club hosts an Elvis impersonator contest each year at the Poteet Strawberry Festival. Founded in 1989, the club has become the world’s largest Elvis Presley Fan Club, and the contest features a variety of Elvis impersonators from all over the country competing for thousands in cash and prizes.

Elvis fans can visit myspace.com/rayelvis57, or listen to Hastings’ rendition of “Love Me” at elviiradio.com, where hundreds of impersonators have recorded their own tributes in memory of one of the greatest rock stars of all time. •

Sonya, This guy is not San Antonio's only Elvis Impersonator (And he is definitely not one of San Antonio's best). There are many wonderful and talented Elvis Impersonators here in San Antonio. Please give them all some of the credit! Thanks

Sonya was only writing about someone she found on the internet. It is not her fault that all other ETA's do not promote themselves. It is true that there are various ETA's in San Antonio that have talent but you cannot deny that the person named in this article is not one the talented ETA's in San Antonio when you look at his record.Everyone can compete in San Antonio on the same level but until they have won as many contests as he has, then you cannot dispute the list of wins. When other ETA's step up to the plate and win as many contests as he's won, then you can claim that he is not the best in SA!It is only your opinion which sounds like a bit of sour grapes on your part!Give credit where credit is due. After all,he did represent S.A.in Las Vegas and came in third place.

The other ETA's should start getting out there and displaying their talent.Get a website or myspace page and support each other.Don't develop and ego over this because after all,it's all about paying tribute to Elvis.

One more thing to add to this commentary, the person who wrote this negative opinion about this ETA should go and compete at the Strawberry Festival and see if he thinks he's the best in S.A.!Just think of it as a challenge to be judged in front of your peers! At least Ray Elvis came in second in this competition last year.Even he knows he can't win them all but if you think your better, then by all means go and try!

I have seen many ETA in SA, and surrounding areas, and he is not the best! There are better. But he is also not the worst. I commend him for his accomplishments and talent. And HBR, you assume too much! Careful....

Ok guys enough of this bickering about who the best is.I never claimed to be the best and if mm doesn't think I'm the best, then he surely is entitled to his opinion.Besides,Sonya was kind enough to write an article on me.

I didn't contact her,she called me because I was the only one she could fine thru the internet.MM is right about that there are many ETA's in San Antonio who are very talented.I did happen to mention to her exactly that but she just forgot to put that in her article.I never said that I was the only one!In fact, there are several ETA's that are good friends of mine.Tony Delgado is one who lives here in S.A.Both he and I always exchange ideas and we never fight about foolish things about who's better.I happen to respect anyone who gives most of himself to fullfill people's fantasies of having an Elvis entertainer.Unless your a full time Elvii, then you can make decent money but for most of us who are part-time,you don't make much,it's just the thrill to see those faces light up.

If anyone wants to build a website for themselves, let me know,I will be glad to help anyone.Besides, before too long,I may retire because I'm getting too old for this.

I don't care if anyone thinks I'm the best or not because for me it's just about being an entertainer.I go and sing my heart out and hope that people got their monies worth.I just hope to make a little mark that people will remember that I just loved to sing and for being the best, well I'll just let you guys decide that but it really isn't important to me.

My mother use to tell me if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all. That's what I believe in because I would rather be humble then to boast about myself.

I hope that all my ETA friends from out of town get a chance to read this who may be younger and also know that there is always someone else out there who is better but always just do your best.Always be gracefull when you lose a contest and always be humble when you win one!

Thank you for your input on this article and Sonya already told me she was sorry about not including that there are other ETA's in San Antonio so I say to all you ETA's,keep Taking Care Of Business!

Sincerely,

RayElvis

So MM,don't you feel foolish puting this ETA down when his track record has shown he has beaten the best San Antonio had to offer?

I think anyone who Knocks any ETA for trying to Keep Elvis alive is just jealous! I have met Ray Myself and he does a great job doing just that! He has the passion and the love for Elvis and it shows! There are many many Eta's who don't do justice to Elvis and its just to make money. Why not just stop the comments knocking what this woman wrote about and be happy that this is another person doing what he Loves to do!

Hello Ray Elvis, I am an ETA here in San Antonio, and you are right. The thrill we get from lighting up faces while being in Elvis character is what it is all about. The Elvis fans are energized by us as Elvis and we in turn feed off that energy. The more they want it, the more we give it to them. Five years ago that is what got me hooked! It is the reactions to our performances that keep us doing Elvis. I just want to do it better and better as time goes on. By the way Ray Elvis, don't retire. I tried it and it doesn't work. You will be back!
