Sanden’s Eleven
Buttercup will fulfill a longtime ambition of guitarist Joe Reyes by performing their next Wiggle Room show sitting on stools and crooning seven of their beloved hits in the manner of Frank, Dean, and Sammy at the Sands in 1960 (it’s unclear who, if anyone, will be forced to fill Joey Bishop’s loafers). It’s an approach that group bassist Odie has coined the “Butt Pack.”
Part of the fun for the band is the opportunity to bring in some friends (who also happen to be seriously formidable musicians) to play instruments that they’re not associated with, or haven’t played onstage for a long time. The band will include Mark Rubenstein on drums (revisiting the instrument he played in the Rejects), Krazy Kat owner Gene Ng on bass, Mechanical Walking Robotboy leader Chris Smart on guitar, and Dan Klein blowing some hot trombone. The show is set for Monday, May 8, at the Wiggle Room (2301 S. Presa), with Girl in a Coma opening at 9 p.m. Cover is $5.
Veteran singer-songwriter Jason Gerard celebrates the release of his new CD, Glass Asylum, with a show at Splach Sports Bar and Grill (905 Nogalitos) on Saturday, May 6. Gerard, founder of the band Egoteric, has devoted much of his career to honing a combination of electro-pop and new-wave. Showtime is 8 p.m.
