Bio: Chris Forbrich challenged Mary Alice Cisneros, who terms-out this year, for D1 seat last election and managed to drum up nearly 40 percent – no small feat for a newcomer up against a Cisneros. Forbrich, owner of a local IT consulting business, says he has been non-stop campaigning since his loss in 2009. Openly gay, Forbrich belongs to several equal rights organizations and currently serves as a board member with the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio. Forbrich is also the President of the Bexar County Young Democrats and was appointed to work on the Bexar County Dems budget and finance committee in the wake of the party’s damaging embezzlement scandal.

Diego Bernal

Bio: Before he started campaigning for the D1 seat, Diego Bernal was probably best known for his involvement in the local arts and music scene. A San Antonio Native with undergrad, masters and law degrees from University of Michigan, Bernal has cut his teeth in civil rights advocacy with groups like the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and MALDEF. While still at U of M, Bernal worked on education and job training programs for gang-involved youth in Detroit. He continued on to work in Harlingen, Texas with Communities in Schools (CIS), a literacy program for at-risk youth. Bernal eventually returned to San Antonio and worked as a MALDEF staff attorney.

Bio: Ralph Medina is a 35-year veteran of the City of San Antonio Fire Department, including over 20 years as a District Chief. Medina has also worked with local neighborhood associations and has been the Executive Director of the Texas Reinvestment Corporation, a nonprofit housing corporation, and the president of the Southwest Reinvestment Corporation, a non-profit housing corporation. Medina has also served with the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association, King William Association, and Monte Vista Historical Association.

Lauro A. Bustamante

Bio: District 1 has been a hot race from the outset with strong crop of candidates vying for the downtown seat. Still, Lauro Bustamante, a perennial candidate who has in the past run for local, state and national office, has mostly been left out of the conversation. In his first ever election win last year, Bustamante secured a seat on the Edwards Aquifer Authority board, beating out George Rice, a noted hydrologist with decades of experience investigating water quality hazards. Right after joining the aquifer board, Bustamante eyed the open D1 seat and decided to throw his name into the hat. Bustamante has a law degree from the University of Houston and has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years.

Carolyn Kelley

Bio: Carolyn Kelley is a senior fundraising consultant with the Hodge Group, a consulting firm primarily for non-profits. national award-winning nonprofit executive and fundraiser. Her work has been recognized by Bill Clinton and even the U.S. Treasury Department. While she’s the newest candidate to the district, Kelley’s the co-founder of the Tobin Hill Community Association and has also served on District 1 Zoning Commission.
