In an interview with Telemundo promoting the new Ghostbusters movie, Leslie Jones gets a little spooked when host Alberto Romero asks the first question in Spanish. And like any career comedian, she diffuses her nervousness with a joke.
“I was so scared he was going to do it in Spanish,” says Jones. “I only know Selena ‘Como La Flor.’ I can sing that for you.”
Throughout the interview, Romero switches back and forth between Spanish and English. Jones follows suit, trying to pick up a few new vocab words on media day. (Side note: on interview days like this, actors spend countless hours in front of interviewers, answering a series of very similar questions from each outlet. A little humor makes the marathon a little more tolerable.)
After her co-star Kate McKinnen answers a question in Spanish, Jones breaks out her Selena impersonation. A couple words are off, but given that Selena, too, learned Spanish by way of song, Jones' cover is right on target.
Hired as a writer on SNL in 2014, Jones became the oldest comedian to join the show when she became a regular the next season at the age of 47. That 40th season marked the first time two African-American women were on cast simultaneously, sharing the stage with Sasheer Zamata.
In the past few days, Jones has been the target of hate speech on Twitter, surpassing the pre-release and ridiculous controversy of an all-female Ghostbusters. As a response, Twitter "permanently suspended" the mouthpiece of this racism and sexism, the alt-right personality and Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos. Jones, voluntarily, has left the social media outlet.
I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the shit I got today...wrong
