UTSA's 2024 creative writing reading series welcomes Jasminne Mendez. She is a best-selling Dominican-American poet, translator, playwright and award winning author of several books for children and adults. This collection of work stitches together Louisiana imagery with domestic lesbian life. Alex uses iconography such as catfish, gas stations, ‘gators, and baptist themes to allow her to converse about the Southern lesbian experience in a way that refuses to demonize the South as a whole. Raised in Kansas City, Mo., Carmen Cartiness Johnson is a self-taught acrylic painter. Her early work of flat, colored, graphic shapes is based on summer visits to her grandmother’s farm. Her later paintings progressed to a more dimensional painterly style. Johnson’s narrative art takes a snapshot of people interacting in social situations. The inspiration for her vivid paintings comes from poems, songs, novels, media, as well as the works of Romare Bearden and Diego Rivera. 2102077211

The group exhibition Water Ways brings together works that make direct reference to water in addition to those that refer symbolically to it. Here, artists picture swimmers, capture moonlit lakes, re-create a shimmering pool, map unknown watercourses, or depict mythic tales associated with oceans or rivers. These works are balanced by others that allude to or characterize water like bridges, boats, borders, depth, fluidity, motion, purification, reflection, source, and its alterable state. “Uprooting” depicts a cumulus of experiences and life occurrences that continuously steer the personal path toward eventful situations that modify the perception of the self. It is a search for the self through the examination of statements of faith, a sense of displacement, beliefs of belonging, ideas of existence, and acceptance of the human condition. The Art and Art History Department at Trinity University presents Processing, an exhibition by Senior Art Majors Ayden Bartsch, Piper Foster, Jacob Iverson, Michaela Judis, Jaeden Morgan, Pedro Ordoñez Acosta, and Dawson Polovina. The exhibition includes photography, painting, and drawing. Together, the works depict a desire for creative experimentation and reflection, while highlighting the unique process of each artist. This course offers an exploration into the fundamentals of drawing the human figure in a procedural approach. Students will explore how to draw the gesture clearly and learn to contain the forms that make up the human body into basic volumes (i.e. spheres, boxes, ellipses and cylinders). Towards the end of the course, students will concentrate on specific landmarks of anatomy and useful facts about the human body, in order to develop a strong systematic approach that frees them creatively, while adding complexity and new level of believability to their drawings. $500 (non-members), $440 (members). Monday, April 15, 2024 is the kickoff of the MEGA CORAZÓN celebration, an online spoken word marathon that is part of San Antonio’s National Poetry Month participation. This festival presents San Antonio’s poetic tradition that combines street, classical, and slam performance styles in a production that is improvisational, at times painful, and choreographed for a highly visual impact.
