Since taking up the awesome task of following all-things-artsy in San Anto I've come across a multitude of cool things in the city and on the net. I feel as if I've merely scratched the surface of the arts scene in the city. Here's looking to '08 and all the escapades that come along with it.
Let's begin with … All Things Local:
Cools things I've discovered in '07:
- The First Thursday scene — Crowds are few, which is the perfect way to check out the newest piece of work at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.
- New galleries popping up around town — such as the Mandala Gallery ("Mandala Gallery imports India and more,"October 17-23, 2007).
- Local DIY movement — Not only with the DIY Factory or with the SMART Fair but with the Old San Antonio Playhouse ("Extreme Home Makeover: Theater Edition," November 28-December 4) who has taken a different approach to the community theater scene and all DIY fashionistas/os.
- And of course, the seedy underbelly of the local arts scene.
Earlier in the year while I became absolutely obsessed with two things — the classic clip of Mexican crooner Juan Gabriel falling down
and Found magazine
. I can occupy myself for hours on the site looking at doodles on napkins and "action lists" scribbled on crumbled up pieces of paper. Site I came across today while compiling this list: Faceyourpockets.com
is in the same vein as Found
magazine and PostSecret
but a little less intrusive … kind of. The concept is to dump out everything from your pockets, place them on a scanner, then place your face on it — and scan. Images from all over the world are found on the site. Overtly pointless but still a work of art. Site that'll be bookmarked for my tenure here at the Current:
When my friends and I first stepped into Loft 120-2
we felt as if we were sucked into a much cooler scene in which we didn't quite fit in but no one seemed to notice. As we walked around, examined the artwork on the walls, or chatted it up with tattoo artists, we felt part of a cool, hip new scene – that's ultimately what the Loft is about. Since becoming the site of events such as SET and the locale for photo shoots, it's become the
place to gather and be seen. Check out the site for news on a New Year's party going down at the Loft.
