King Willie's outdoor barbeque restaurant opened August 6 at 943 South Alamo in the heart of the King William historical district. Owner Gloria Hernandez moved the longstanding Southtown Emporium to the back of the building and turned the front into a restaurant, she says, out of popular demand during the First Friday art walks. Along with merchandise by local artists, food, and drinks, Hernandez plans on having two bands play during First Fridays. King Willie's is open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-8p.m. Just look for their signature frog wearing a crown.

Another all-outdoor venue, Hot Spot BBQ at 2334 N. St. Mary's specializes in smoked brisket, pork shoulder, and pork ribs. Every first Friday and end of the month, Hot Spot offers smoked cabrito. Saturdays they serve smoked barbarcoa for breakfast from 5-10 a.m. Bands perform on the patio Friday and Saturday from 9:30p.m.-2 a.m.

Chipotle Mexican Grill continues to expand its franchise with new locations in Alamo Heights at 3928 Broadway and at the Vineyard shopping center at 1201 North Look 1604 West. All Chipotle restaurants are opened from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Customers at Chipotle can build their burrito to their liking with ingredient options like chicken, barbacoa, vegetables, and beans.

W.D. Deli has extended its business hours until 9 p.m. Monday-Friday. "Everyone asked us to change," owner Wayne Beers said. Menu additions include pizza, served from 4:30-9 p.m., and new sandwiches. W.D. Deli is located at 3123 Broadway.

San Antonio native Robert Valencia is opening Baked in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York, in collaboration with the owners of Manhattan's popular Chocolate Bar. Valencia, who worked at Biga under Bruce Auden and attended the baking and pastry program at the prestigious California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, until recently served as Executive Pastry Chef at Blue Fin restaurant at the W Times Square Hotel in New York City.

Desert island fare

August 30 through September 19, Chuy's Restaurant at 18008 Hwy 281 at Loop 1604 will be hosting their 16th Annual Green Chile Festival at their 18008 US Hwy 281 at Loop 1604 location. This year's theme is "Survivor," featuring menu items such as green chile ceviche, tribal tostadas, campfire roasted enchiladas, green chile cheesecake, and Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. Fresh peppers by the pound will be sold at $2.25 fresh, $3.50 fire-roasted, and $4.50 for fire-roasted, peeled, deseeded, and diced. In celebration of the festival, all Chuy's locations will offering a frequent diner contest where customers who eat one of the 10 special menu items will receive a souvenir and a chance to win the Ultimate Survivor Prize Pack.

Picture-perfect plates

On September 15 from 6-9pm, Piatti Restaurant, located in the Quarry at 255 Basse Rd, will host their annual Arts e Platters featuring pictures of Piatti's plates by some of the city's top photographers. Proceeds from the silent auction for the photos will go to the San Antonio Area Tourism Council. Tickets to the event are $35 per person and $50 per couple, and can be purchased from the Tourism Council. For more information call 886-9991.

Grape wrap

The Texas wine harvest season winds down at the LightCatcher Winery, which will have 40 tons of fruit for the public to crush on September 4. For $10 per person, stompers can enjoy live music, food, and wine sampling. This event is open to adults and children over 12. The winery is located at 6435A Nine Mile Bridge Road, Fort Worth, Texas. Central Market will host a Bake Sale Favorites cooking class on September 3 from 11am-1:30pm The course will be taught by the cooking school staff and the cost is $35. Central Market is located at 4821 Broadway. For more information call 368-8617.
