Recently opened: Culver's Restaurant, 5836 DeZavala, features signature menu items including a butterburger and frozen custard. The butterburger is made from 100 percent U.S. beef sandwiched between two lightly buttered, toasted buns. The frozen custard is made fresh every day with milk and a touch of egg yolk, and is served either in a cake cone, waffle cone, or a dish with single, double, or triple scoops. It is offered in chocolate, vanilla, or the flavor of the day. Other menu items include sandwiches, garden fresh salads, sundaes, shakes, malts, and dinner selections such as shrimp, chicken, and Norwegian cod served with french fries or mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and a dinner roll with butter. Moved: Bar Azul is relocating from its downtown location on Losoya Street to the Matisse Restaurant on the North Side. Known for its Cosmopolitans, Pisco Sours, Mexico City Martinis, and Manzanazuls, the trendy lounge is teaming with Matisse to create a vibe similar to clubs and restaurants in Miami and Los Angleles. "They have a great restaurant and then transform into a bar after dinner is over," said Azul co-owner Scot Sours in a press release. "We want to introduce that idea here."

Togas and empanadas

Wanted: Flaky bakers with a Latin soul
Beto's Comida Latina is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month by hosting the third annual Empanada Cook-off on Sunday, September 19 from 4-8pm at 8142 Broadway. Beto's will provide the required ingredients, and participation in the contest is free.

Tickets are $18 and include the opportunity to taste the empanadas with an array of salads, sides, and wine. Fifty percent of this year's proceeds will benefit the children at Southwest Mental Health Center. Info: 582-6451.

Toga party
Mina and Dimi's, 7159 Hwy 90, hosts a Greek wine-tasting toga event 9:30pm Saturday, September 18.

Participants are encourage to wear a toga for the four course meal, which includes salad, solmadas, pastitsio - layers of beef and pasta topped with béchamel and Parmesan - and bougata, a creamy custard dessert. Cost is $46 per person. RSVP at 674-DIMI.

Dinner under the stars
Blanca Aldaco hosts a dinner under the stars on Saturday, September 18 at Sunset Station, 100 Hoefgen. Enjoy the different regions of Mexico with a five-course meal paired with Martini Margaritas. Cost is $49 per person. Info: 222-9481.
