Truffle season is in swing; great news for your palate, not so much for the old checkbook. But there’s nothing like the real, funky, earthy thing (as opposed to “truffle” oils), so find the unmaxed credit card and make reservations at Las Canarias on the River Walk for Chef Scott Cohen’s five-course prix-fixe menu. Secure in the approximate total of your final tab ($125 per with wine pairings; $89 apiece stone-cold sober), you can sample black and white truffles in a variety of dishes including giant sea scallops, beef tartare, a chocolate tart, and more. Cove proprietor Lisa Asvestas is excited about her restaurant’s new wine menu, which features popular Californians such as Simi Chardonnay and Cab and Napa Valley’s St. Supéry. Astevas’s favorite: a Clos Pegase Pinot Noir. You can choose your own favorite at this Thursday’s $10 wine tasting, which starts at 7 p.m. While you’re there, sample the Cove’s updated menu, which has a new focus on local, organic produce. An arugula, poached pear, and gorgonzola salad, made with arugula from Austin’s Boggy Creek Farm, sounds delicious, as does a vegetarian platter with Moroccan sweet-potato salad.
