You can still pick your own blackberries, and peaches are just coming into season at the orchard, which is owned by Janie’s cousin, Gary Marburger. Berry pros (those planning to collect four quarts or more) must make an appointment, but amateurs can just drop in (early, because the late birds miss out). Lazy birds can rely on Janie’s crew, who will be baking pie and cobbler for the barbecue season: Peach and blackberry is a mouthwatering combo, as is peach and blueberry. A blackberry cobbler will be juicier than its round counterpart, says Janie: “You don’t have to thicken it to make it stand up prettier like a slice.”
A-B has a preference for local fruits, but it’s countered by a nostalgia for our northern childhood, where tart rhubarb grows like a weed. Janie’s will bake it standalone or with strawberries for a quintessentially summer treat.
