From 2:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, A-B will be scarfing tamales at Our Lady of the Lake’s first Tamalada Throwdown, likely in front of an audience of salivating spectators. We aren’t all that into overt displays of public gluttony, but it’s all for a good cause.
The competition is part of Tamale Fest @ the Lake, which also features tamale-eating contests, food and drink booths, kids’ areas, and acts such as Tejano star Patsy Torres. Judges for the Throwdown (which, we all know, is really a tamale-making party, not an eating orgy) are Pat Sharpe of Texas Monthly, Diana Barrios Treviño of Los Barrios, Michael Bolner of Bolner’s Fiesta Products, and Valerie Gonzalez from Delicious Tamales — plus A-B.
Seven A-list chefs, including Jason Dady, Rene Fernandez, and Lisa Wong, have signed up to compete. Each may submit as many as three variations for the judges’ august consideration — which means that 21 tamales could be in the offing, per professional eater. There had better be beer.
The full event runs from noon to 8 p.m. at the campus, 411 S.W. 24th St., and is free. A portion of the proceeds go to the school’s rebuilding fund and to endowed scholarships. ollusa.edu for directions and parking info.
