Blanca Aldaco opened her restaurant at Sunset Station abutting the Alamodome a decade ago, only to have the rug pulled out from under her when the Spurs moved to their new location a few years later. She has staved off closing with special events, a complimentary shuttle to Spurs games, free pickup for the downtown office crowd at lunch, long happy hours, private patio parties, and a stage. But the long-term prognosis is not rosy, with the Alamodome a fading attraction.

Blanca is probably not helping herself by jacking up dinner prices. A pleasant and tasty Mexican dinner should not run $50 a couple without drinks. For $16 we had the Pescadito Aldaco, a yummy pan-seared tilapia with a couple of large grilled shrimp on confetti rice with a bit of spinach and a mild chile and garlic sauce. It was a comfortable but hardly generous portion. Go after happy hour, which ends at 7 p.m., and a beer is $5.  Blanca’s justly famed tres-leches cake is a great closer, for another $6.25.

Lunches, however, run a reasonable $10/person. Try the tacos al pastor, a fine meal for $8. Even better, order before 11:30 a.m. weekdays for the early-bird specials., (210) 222-0561. Free parking on Hoefgen.
