ARTIFACTS

February is special for so many reasons ... first of all, football is officially over, which paves the way for Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and of course, Black History Month. Don’t think we forgot, in fact — we’ve been keeping tabs of all events thanks to sablackhistory.com. This helpful site also provides a forum to discuss everything from culture to community.

And now for a mini Art Capades ... this past weekend was Second Saturday and the SoFlo area was filled with an assortment of artsy folk, from those lining up at Fl!ght to check out Buttercup to the college crowds tip-toeing into LA. David’s studio — there was plenty going on. I checked out the one-night-only exhibition Nueva Generación held at Lonestar Studios, curated by Alex Rubio, featuring a group of incredibly talented young artists. (Albert Alvarez’s detail-heavy tributes to the city drew attention both at Lonestar and Gallista Gallery.)

Last week I received an email from local photographer Red Baklava about his involvement with Two Sisters, a charity based in northeast South Africa (check out twosisters.org.za), where he was asked to capture images for a fundraiser taking place in Tokyo. The opportunity will have Red jet-setting from Tokyo to South Africa for two weeks. We wish him the best!
