Art Post 05.4.07 Art news has been piling up like fluffy airborn spring allergens, readers, and I apologize for sweeping up a big pile before I puff my cheeks and blow a big snuff your way.

Starters:
Despite a home team of Spurs-championship skill and flair, San Antonio did not bring back the $50K Hunting Art Prize from Houston last weekend. The honor, and the large cheque, went to Dallas-based Michael Tole for "Untitled (Woman), pictured here.

In a way, you have to admire the wild arbitrariness of awarding $50,000 based on a single work of art (Those crazy Brits! Hunting PLC is an "international oil services company" that maintained balance in the universe by moving to Houston from the UK just ahead of the Halliburton et al Dubai repatriation movement). At any rate, five figures are obviously nothing to these people, otherwise they would never use a two-tier process involving slides and a single work of art to award $50,000 to a member of a group that regularly earns less than that for a solid year's work. (It seems like a lot of money to win over a single artist. I wonder what the Hunting folks would make of Regis Shephard's February 27 "the war @ home", and Jason Stout's April 25 "Black Gold"?)

The finalists, winnowed down from more than 900 applicants, included outstanding SA artists Mark Hogansen, Nate Cassie, Joan Fabian, and Larry Graeber - they were among the 104 artists invited to the awards ceremony in Houston on April 28.

Second Course:
Curator Kate Green is leaving Artpace after more than three years selecting shows for the Hudson (Show)Room and supporting the contemporary-art foundation's educational outreach programs. Green, who previously worked at MOMA's prestigious P.S. 1, is sticking around town and, among other projects, is contributing to new online culture journal NeoAztlan.com. You can see Kate's final AP show, Power Play, featuring Paris-based artists Adel Abdessemed, Mircea Cantor, and Claire Fontaine, at Artpace through July 15.

Salad days:
I was out of the loop last week, happily held captive by Fiesta's finest event - Cornyation - an evening of brilliant parodies of celebrities and politics designed by San Antonio's most perverse creative minds: No ego or folly was left unflayed - from Madonna and Lance Bass to downtown commercialization and immigration "reform" - they all got the skewer. I had the honor of serving as King Anchovy for the 2007 court, attended by kick-ass band Yoshimoto and some of SA's fiercest Rollergirls (MissyFits, Prim Reapers, and Dragon Divas all represented). The dress, conceived by designer Will Muniz and executed by Greg Mannino, was made from Current pages that you were already done with, dear readers.  Fiesta-sa.org has great pics from all of the skits, as does the official Cornyation website. Consider saving your Fiesta pesos for next year's event and springing for CornyAngel seats - they cost more (two for $150), but you don't have to stand in line for prime seats, and you get two official Cornyation medals. Best of all: you support great community organizations: Last year Cornyation gave away $90,000 to groups such as the San Antonio AIDs Foundation. This year's tallies will be out shortly.

Dessert:
UTSA profs Justin Boyd and Leslie Raymond (who is one half of Potter-Belmar Labs) are hosting a new media video art screening, featuring the work of their students, 7-9 p.m. tonight at the UTSA Downtown Buena Vista building off of Durango. Free parking under the highway south of Durango.
