ARTifacts

Missionsunknown.com is a new blog covering San Anto’s artmakers of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, and whose cover story awesomely features the Carlos Cortés Museum Reach Grotto (which yours truly co-reviewed in last week’s big river-art feature, online at sacurrent.com). Blog co-founder John Picacio says about Mr. Cortés’s opus in situ: “it takes a special town to integrate the fantastic so seamlessly into its real-life, urban fabric. That’s San Antonio for you.”

That’s Missionsunknown.com for you, too, tapping into an oft-undervalued realm of creative output, and celebrating San Antonio’s scarifying wealth of sci-fi/fantasy/horror talent. Picacio is a Hugo (think sci-fi Oscars) nominee this year in the Best Professional Artist category, and has designed tons of book covers (his Dali/Poe-infected cover for Rudy Rucker’s novel The Hollow Earth rocks). Blogging alongside Picacio will be Sanford Allen— yup, that Sanford Allen, of Boxcar Satan fame, who also writes horror fiction, and Paul “The Mac Guy” Vaughn, former tech columnist with the Express-News. We’ll be watching.
