Artist in Residence Vol. I

Gary Sweeney is the merry prankster of SA’s visual-arts scene, turning out provocative double
entendres along the lines of his airport installation “South Texas Souvenirs” (Fiesta. Siesta. Repeat.) and the politically themed work that he showed at Southwest School of Art & Craft in 2007. When he’s not making art or contemplating the universe from the bottom of his swimming pool (scuba gear!), he manhandles your bags at the aiport.

Gary Sweeney hipped us to artist Roert Wurzbach’s fabulous houseware displays at Johnnie Chuoke’s Home & Hardware. Obelisks ornamented with pricey body care vie for attention with a nightmarish topiary “Bunny Man,” and, most surprising of all, Robert’s lovely, luxe, and colorful beaded paintings and fiber art, which are strictly NFS. Robert and his sister Emily’s homemade seasonal wreaths are for sale, though, and apparently fly off the shelves.
