News and notes from the San Antonio theater scene

All (well, at least two) roads lead to theater

July 15 is the application deadline for writers and directors for the San Antonio Theatre Coalition's Second Annual TheatreASAP 24-hour theater-making event `see In the Round, June 16-22`. On July 17, get involved at SATCO's Summer Community Cast Party, open to anyone interested in being a part of or supporting the theater community. More information on both events is available at satheatre.com.

Everything's comin' up homos

July 22, auditions for Jan Buttram's comic drama Texas Homos will introduce a new production company to San Antonio, led by the new owner of the Alamo Street Restaurant and Theatre, King William resident and preservationist Dr. Paul Boskind. The production, slated to open September 30, will mark the post-renovation reopening (all previously scheduled shows have been canceled) of the historic venue, and the first performance outside of New York for Buttram's script. For more information, check out the "Auditions" link at satheatre.com. Marcie Larsen, longtime owner of Alamo Street, sold the building earlier this year and, after easing the transition, is now officially a lady of leisure. She thanks her patrons and friends for the comfort and support they have provided over the years.

Water water everywhere

Gemini Ink's Dramatic Reader's Theater program presents Water Works, a performance in conjunction with the Witte Museum's World of Water exhibit, on July 24. Water Works will be the first Reader's Theater offering to incorporate dance, along with its usual thematically relevant literary selections read by professional local actors. The free performance will begin at 5 p.m. at the museum's Frost Gate, where musicians will lead a procession into the gallery. The text, which runs the gamut from Native American prayers to contemporary global environmental writing, will illuminate the exhibit in a fitting culmination to Gemini's own Summer Literary Festival, the theme of which is Purple Mountain Majesties: Writing in the Natural World. Call 357-1900 for more information.

You're comin' back a star! (on the search engine)
