Arts It's all centro

Centro Cultural Aztlán celebrates its 28th birthday Friday, August 26, with a silent auction. Centro, whose programs include the ViAztlán journal, the Lowrider Custom Car and Truck Exhibit, and the upcoming Día de los Muertos festival, has outgrown its home in historic Las Palmas Mall. Proceeds from the event will support the organization's move to the Westside Deco District on Fredericksburg Road. Miguel Cortinas, Daniel Guerrero, Leticia Huerta, Cesar Martinez, Cruz Ortiz, Juan Miguel Ramos, and more than 60 other artists have donated work for the auction and it's all on display this week, so there's still time to decide which piece you want to blow your monthly budget on. WOAI weather caster Maclovio Perez will MC and Elaine Garibay & Cats Don't Sleep will serenade the crowd. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. at 803 Castroville Rd., Suite 402. For more info, call 432-1896.

Centro Alameda is teaming up with KCOR-AM to celebrate Hispanic radio legends with a 13-week series of live broadcasts from the historic Alameda Theatre. KCOR host Jesse Torres will interview musical legends including Rita Vidaurri, Don Santiago Jimenez' son Flaco Jimenez, and Miro Valdez, air live and recorded performances, and bestow lifetime-achievement awards. The premiere broadcast, 2 p.m. Saturday, August 27, at the Alameda, 318 W. Houston, will posthumously honor Los Tres Reyes founder Daniel Garzes. The broadcast can be heard at 1350 AM. Tickets for the live event are $10-50 and can be purchased at the theater box office or in advance by calling 299-4300. Call 299-4300 or visit for the complete schedule.
