Mike Flanigin brings 'Super Soul' cool to Luna

It has two 61-note keyboards, nine stops, nine preset keys, a volume pedal, drawbars, a Leslie speaker, and weighs between 300 and 400 pounds. And Wednesday night at Luna, Mike Flanigin is going to play the Hammond B3 organ like a badass.

He will perform as part of his trio, which includes Austin guitarist Denny Freeman, a member of the Antone's house band who performed with Jimmy Vaughan and Taj Mahal; and drummer George Rains, also a player in Vaughan's band, whose pedigree includes stints with Doug Sahm and Bob Dylan.

Flanigin is steeped in the tradition of '50s and '60s jazz masters Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and Jimmy McGriff, who transformed the B3 from novelty item to legitimate instrument. With its signature tone - a swirling vibrato generated by a Leslie speaker's rotating horns - the B3 is jazzy, bubbly, and incredibly soulful.
