Best of SA 2013

Best Local Activist/Watchdog/Nonprofit Leader

1. Lanny Sinkin
Solar San Antonio, 118 Broadway, Ste. 621, (210) 354-0236, solarsanantonio.org

The Aztec sun god was called Tonatiuh (Toh-nah-tee-OO); in SA, we just like to call him Lanny (LA-nee). Winner of this category in our Best of 2010-2011 issues, Solar San Antonio executive director Lanny Sinkin has always been in our top three for this spot. Replacing his father, Solar SA founder (and soon-to-be centenarian) Bill Sinkin as director in 2009 has brought the younger Sinkin much praise. An activist at heart, Sinkin fought against the construction of the South Texas Project, a nuclear power facility in Bay City in the ’70s and his legal career gave him experience in many environmental, civil rights, and national security areas. Under his direction, Solar SA tenaciously pursues bringing solar and other sustainable energy sources to all San Antonians, and given the latest tribulations with CPS’ solar energy programs, we’re thankful the sun hasn’t set on Sinkin’s activist ways.
