Make it a double

On Black Friday two years ago, bankers and North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce members cut a ribbon, ate pizza, and drank iced tea at Freetail Brewing Co.

Iced-tea-sipping suits would seem an inauspicious start for such a venture, but this wasn’t the crowd Scott Metzger opened the place for. Only two years into its life at Northwest Military and Loop 1604, the brewpub has made 136 batches of beer, done some wild experimentation, and become a mecca for beer lovers in Texas and a destination for hopheads from all over the nation.

Last weekend, the three-day celebration of Freetail’s second anniversary featured 30 different house beers from head brewer Jason Davis and assistant brewer John Lee.

“When we opened in 2008, we definitely believed we would be successful, but we could never have imagined the way our local community has embraced our brewery,” Metzger said.

And people have come with an appetite, too. If you haven’t been lately, chef Gary Butler’s signature pizzas and brick oven appetizers are still there, but there are new items, including beef brisket.

The search continues for a second location for Freetail. An actual organized push by Houston beer lovers and downtown officials has its own Twitter feed: @freetailhouston.

Ranger Creek official

Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling Co. has final approval from the state label police who protect us from beers that actually have the word beer on the label. (Buy me a beer, and I’ll do my best to try to explain that one.)

That means you can find it in quality pubs starting this week. Official grand opening celebrations include samples of Ranger Creek Beers and fire-sale pints at Flying Saucer Draught Emporium on December 9 and brewery tours and live music on December 11. Lüke on the Riverwalk and the Tap Exchange also are carrying the brew. There also will be a chance to sample during New Braunfels’ annual downtown stroll Waissalfest.

Pints & Pedis

Girls’ Pint Out is holding its second San Antonio event December 1 from noon to 2:30 p.m. Complimentary pints of beer from local breweries will be served while Studio J at 128 E. Houston Street provides pedicures, the profits of which will go to charitable causes. Go to for more details. KENS-TV’s Great Day SA will be there to shoot the festivities.
