Circa Survive: 'Violent Waves'

For their fourth album, Circa Survive have gone completely DIY, leaving Atlantic Records to do everything on their own. Violent Waves is arguably the band’s most subtle album. On first listen, you might not hear a “Get Out” or “I Felt Free” as on Blue Sky Noise or any of their songs that were instant favorites. This album grows on you starting from the second listen. The songs feel wrapped in layers that keep peeling away as you listen. “Sharp Practice” lets out some of the frustration of making a living as a musician, with Anthony Green singing, “You get what you pay for/ we can’t sell our goddamn souls anymore.” “The Lottery,” which painfully describes cancer taking over a loved one, features guest vocals from Geoff Rickly from hardcore favorite Thursday (now on indefinite hiatus). The epic trio of “My Only Friend,” “Brother Song,” and closing track “I’ll Find a Way” will have you hitting the replay button and searching for the lyrics online. You can get the album for $5 at Heads up: See them live at Sunset Station on October 3.
