Bio: Early on in the D4 race, some have dubbed Leticia Cantu a shoe-in for the seat, given her connections to local politicos – it could also stem from the fact that she briefly took over the D4 seat while her fiancé, Councilman Philip Cortez, was out on Air Force Reserve training last year.
Cantu has been involved in various areas of city government since 2004. Cantu has worked with both Castros – on Joaquin’s campaign, and in Julian’s community office. She was also chief of staff to Mary Alice Cisneros, though the councilwoman fired her in 2008.

Bio: One of the youngest candidates running this year, Rey Saldaña raised eyebrows when he came out as one of the largest fundraisers in any city race early on in the campaign. He’s only 24, but much of Saldaña’s experience is on par with his biggest opponent, Leticia Cantu, working with the offices of both state Rep. Joaquin Castro and Councilman Philip Cortez. Saldaña attended Stanford University on a full scholarship, earning two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s, before heading back to San Antonio last fall. He now teaches an urban studies course at Trinity University.
Endorsements: Stonewall Democrats
