When I see a comic with a guitar I usually think, “Oh, great — here’s a guy who’s going to redo a famous pop song to milk zany homosexual references for cheap laughs.” Nine times out of 10 that’s exactly what happens. Nine times out of 10, a guitar comic is just a guy who was only able to write five jokes and struggles to fill in the gaps with song parodies peppered with references to homophobia and racism.
JR Brow, on the other hand, is one funny ass comedian who just happens to play guitar. He doesn’t jump into songs as much as he picks apart musical clichés and excavates the roots of rock ’n’ roll. The jokes come more from the point of view of a music enthusiast than a professional player, lending to his comedic credibility.
Brow’s guitar playing is not the majority of his act, however. Years of performing have given him a seemingly endless supply of material he can draw upon. You may hear about his experiences as a strip club DJ, growing up in Texas with a military father, or stories involving his misadventures with Ron White. Whichever direction he blows, expect unique and funny.
JR Brow’s four night run at Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club is Thursday through Sunday, April 28-May 1. Visit lolsanantonio.com or call (210) 541-8805 for tickets and show information.
