Flavor File: Greenlight For Dignowity Hill Market, New Hours At Brick & A Burger Pop-Up

The East Side is slowly chipping away at its food desert image with the launch of Dignowity Hill Farmer's Market on Sunday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Founder Michelle Griego, who gathered signatures and support through Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas and City Councilman Alan E. Warrick II received approval via the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department to use Dignowity Park for the market every second and fourth Sunday of the month through November.

As of this past Thursday, Griego was still on the search for more vendors to add to the lineup, which will max out at five for the time being. "I want to get a hold of the produce and focus on food choices before we grow," Griego says. Farmers or ranchers, who will have to accept SNAP, WIC and EBT cards as per the market's mission, can email fmontthehill@gmail.com for details.

Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex (108 Blue Star, 262-8653) has expanded its bar hours. Thirsty bar-goers can enjoy cold cans of Freetail, Karbach and Sierra Nevada brews, along with red and white wines, port, bubbly and mimosas with prices ranging from $2 to $8. Visit them from 4 p.m. to midnight Wednesday-Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

I can't seem to stop writing about pop-ups these days. Mariah Lange of The Bee's Knees Catering Company will host Mark Wildcat Garcia, formerly with Beat Street Coffee Co., Barbaro and The Monterey inside her Tobin Hill space (2089 N. St. Mary's) for burgers, snacks and punker tunes on February 27 and 28 starting at 7 p.m. Prices will tap out at $12 for pimped out bologna sammies, beefy burgers, a chicken sandwich or "pridewich," fries and "loud music and sexual innuendos," according to Garcia.

Chef Jeff Balfour's Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery is closer to opening. The eatery, found at 136 E. Grayson St., Suite 120, announced a mid-March opening this past week. Expect to find upscale seafood, South Texas comfort food and a growing collection of house-made brews sooner, rather than later.

Chef Jerry Toomey has added an enticing lunch menu at 20Nine Restaurant & Wine Bar (255 E. Basse, Suite 940, 798-9463), with prices ranging from $7 to $16 for eatery-fave starters (the meatballs!), salads, sandwiches including the 29 Burger, small pizzas and entrees. Lunch runs 11:30 to 3 p.m.

Finally, Park Social (224 E. Olmos, 822-0100) is testing out an extra happy hour through the end of February. Specials include $3 wells, $4 well cocktails and $5 house cocktails 4-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The bar will also offer a few appetizer coming out of sister restaurant Folc — expect half-off toasts (including the pea and ricotta), sweet breads and deviled bone marrow while you sip on cool drinks.
