Flavor File: SAMA’s wild, hot pop-up café, Earth Burger opens, Cockasian truck up for sale

Need another reason to check out SAMA’s “Matisse: Life in Color” exhibit this summer? The folks behind The Monterey are jazzing up the exhibit with “Wild Beast,” a pop-up eatery inside the Hops Building. The name stems from Les Fauves, or wild beasts, a name given to Matisse and his buddies by an art critic who described their work as “boldly colored [and] thickly textured” compared to their earlier work. The menu, designed in part by chefs Mark Martinez (Barbaro) and Jennifer Dobbertin (Hot Joy) will reflect the period with “simple and spontaneous ... big flavors.” Wild Beast will open for breakfast and lunch daily Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with reservation-only prix fixe dinner served Friday and Saturday nights; email info@themontereysa.com for reservations.

Earth Burger made its debut this past Friday inside the Park North Shopping Center (818 NW Loop 410, (210) 320-5865). Opened by chef Mike Behrend and the rest of the team at Green Vegetarian Cuisine, Earth Burger, San Anto’s first vegetarian fast-food joint, was also the city’s first successful restaurant Kickstarter campaign, raising a cool $40,000. Early reviews are mostly positive, as vegetarians and omnivores alike try the burgers, wraps, corn dogs and more. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and closed on Saturdays so the Behrend family can observe Shabbat.

Southtown is getting yet another eatery. Starfish (709 S Alamo, (210) 375-4423), the latest project via chef Rene Fernandez and son Diego, will open on Monday, June 23. Patrons can expect to find Texan seafood and fresh ingredients along with craft cocktails and brews. Follow Starfish on Facebook for more details on the opening.

Flavor File’s favorite dick joke is on its way out. The Cockasian Food Truck was up for sale on eBay. Owner Candie Yoder had the truck listed through Monday, June 16, but no bids on the $80,000 price tag were placed. The truck, which has been operating for just over two months, will continue to serve at scheduled locations for the time being until a buyer comes forward. In other words, get those Korean fried chicken tenders ASAP.

Finally, Cured is hosting a “Young Guns” dinner on Saturday, June 28 at midnight (yes, you gotta stay up for this one). A slew of chef Steve McHugh’s up-and-coming cooks will take on different courses using heirloom tomatoes as their inspiration. The dinner is $100 per person. Call (210) 314-3929 for reservations.
