The Shops at La Cantera are now the home to the third Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, a Plano-based eatery with a sister location in Oklahoma City, known for its love of local ingredients and namesake boozy dessert. The new location (15900 La Cantera Pkwy, Ste 21200) is located next to Perry's, seats more than 300 eaters and features a full-blown craft cocktail program (that uses large-format ice via locally owned H&C Ice Co.) made using a large whiskey collection. The place, which will open for lunch and dinner the last week of November, with its regional farmers-market-inspired food, looks like an Anthropologie-turned-restaurant, and that's a good thing.
Dough Pizzeria Napoletana (6989 Blanco, (210) 979-6565) launched an impressive happy hour this past week. Patrons can stop in Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and enjoy half off a selection of beer and wine, as well as a cicchetti, or snack, menu with prawns in anchovy butter, flatbread, roasted olives, black truffle deviled eggs, and daily bruschetta and polenta specials. Prices aren't bad either—bites range from $3 to $6.
Remember the days when San Antonio couldn't sustain one cool coffee shop (RIP Ruta Maya)? This is no longer the case as the city's hopped up on awesome java via three Local Coffees, two Brown Coffee joints, Rosella Coffee Co. and the latest to hit the Midtown area, Press Coffee at 606 W French. This one's definitely for the early birds, as hours are limited to 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.
This Thanksgiving let local restaurants tackle the hard work (and pass it off as your own!). Delice Chocolatier & Patisserie (946 N Loop 1604 W, Ste 145, (210) 545-2200) is offering a selection of pies, including a chocolate sea salt caramel tart, for $26-$29. You can pick up a smoked heritage turkey from Parker Creek Ranch, along with a quart of turtle soup, cornbread dressing, fennel and citrus salad, and bourbon gravy for $185 via Cured (306 Pearl Pkwy, Ste 1, (210) 314-3929); orders should be placed by Monday, November 24. The Granary 'Cue & Brew will offer their turkey day package ($125), which includes a 14-pound smoked bird via Plainville Farms in Pennsylvania, one quart pickled cranberries and a 64-ounce growler filled with one of their house-brewed beers. Orders must be placed by Sunday, November 23. You could also let Two Bros BBQ (12656 West Avenue, (210) 496-0222) wow your guests with a meal deal that consists of a 10-12 pound barbecue-spiced bird, giblet gravy, cran-pecan dressing, candied yams, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and a 9-inch apple cobbler for $119.99. Order by Sunday, November 23. Or if you have to make your own sides, order a 15-pound smoked turkey ($49.99) from Big Bob's Burgers (100 N Santa Rosa, (210) 227-2627; 447 W Hildebrand, (210) 734-2627) by November 20.
