Food & Drink : All you can eat

News and notes from the San Antonio food scene

It’s the filé that makes gumbo taste so good — or is it? Bring your recipe to The Cajun French Music Association’s Gumbo Cook-off, 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Anhalt Hall in Anhalt, Texas. If your gumbo isn’t competitive, bring out your gre gre, juju, and jacamo fi na nay for the Cajun dance lessons, cakewalks, and arts & crafts. “Cayenne” Kevin will be cooking up fresh-boiled crawfish and shrimp, and several Cajun bands will be on hand, including Sheryl Cormier & the Cajun Sounds, Paul Daigle & Cajun Gold, and Don Fontenot & Les Amis de la Louisiane. Tickets: $25. Rules, registration, and info: 573-3403.

Lycopene lovers may soon be smacking their foreheads saying, “I could have had a watermelon!” According to promoters of the new Sundia Watermelon Juices, due in H-E-Bs at the end of May, the fruit contains almost 40 percent more of the cancer-fighting antioxidant than tomatoes.

Sundia is marketing watermelon, watermelon-blackberry, watermelon-lime, and watermelon-strawberry juices. Current taste-testers found the juices deliciously reminiscent of that last bite of watermelon before you hit the rind, and were fascinated by Sundia’s color-health connection. “Limes bring the tart, zesty flavor and healthful benefits of yellows and greens,” reads one bottle. We never figured out what the healing property of yellow and green is, but apparently, the blue and purple of blackberries provide anthocyanin, which promotes memory function, and the vague “healthy aging.”

Lest we forget the reason for the season: El Sol Bakery, 728 S. Presa, is offering Spurs Cookies. The vanilla sugar cookies come emblazoned with Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, or Manu Ginobili’s jersey number in orange and white buttercream. Cost: $1.50.

Drink Coffee and Wine Bar, 200 Navarro, is now open. The café serves coffee, pastries, panini, and salads from 7 a.m. on, but in the evening (after 5 p.m.) offers more than 120 wines, with a focus on affordable bottles from Australia, Europe, South America, and Texas.
