Gettin' Jiggy wit it

The Bar Tab has been meaning to investigate Jiggers for quite a while. Throughout 2010, appearances by Dick Wiggler and the Cattle Guards, ConvOi!, the In and Outlaws, and Spies Like Us were missed by, well, us. But finally, on October 30, we couldn’t take it any longer and hired a town car to take us across town to a place that considers itself “the best little live music dive in San Antonio.”

Punk and other alt-flavored stickers adorn Jiggers’ walls, giving the place a gritty charm one might associate with NY’s Lower East Side — before all the condos arrived. Little it is, and all the more charming for it. On this night, Jiggers and Wert Whirl (SA-based artists Shannon Toy and Jim Landers’ “retro sexy” photography project, visit for more info) were hosting a burlesque event inspired by Fritz Lang’s silent, sci-fi classic Metropolis, with performances by the local troupe Scarlet Darlings and music by Austin-based garage-punk rockers Johnny Hootrock.

Although a menacing-looking clown drinking at a small table looked oddly uncomfortable when an androgynous “boylesque” dancer took the stage, twirling and high kicking with a cane, none of the frightening authoritarianism of Lang’s futuristic dystopia was in motion. Having missed Mr. Hootrock’s performance, we settled into barstools and watched the remainder of the provocative show over vodka sodas ($3.50).

As you may know, a “jigger” is a bartending tool that measures booze (44.3602943 milliliters of it to be exact). And although the adorable bartenders at Jiggers know how to use one of the stainless steel, hourglass-shaped contraptions, they seem to have mastered the art of mixing a strong, pain-killing cocktail without one.
