Did you see a bleached-blonde, spiky-haired man around town recently? Were some of your favorite restaurants closed for private parties? If so, you may have already guessed that Guy Fieri was in town two weeks back to film an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, the show he hosts on the Food Network honoring classic greasy spoons across America.
The show has been through San Antonio before, hitting both the Tip-Top Café (comfort food) and The Cove (unexpected food). This time, Fieri hit a number of different San Antonio restaurants, covering Mexican food with Beto’s and Taco Taco Café, which garnered national coverage a few years ago when both Bon Appetit and the Food Network praised their tacos as the best in the country. On the traditional American front, Bun ’N’ Barrel and Magnolia Pancake Haus surely stuffed Guy full of BBQ, burgers, and waffles.
Some unusual stops this round included El Bohio, Moroccan Bites, and Dough Pizzeria. While all three represent some what minority flavors in San Antonio — Puerto Rican, Moroccan, and authentic Napoletana pizza — they can’t all be considered “dives.” But they are lesser-known gems offering great food without a lot of fuss. And they’re all safely distant from the River Walk, still the focus of most of San Antonio’s tourism.
The episode airs in April, so if you frequent any of these restaurants, make sure you get out there and support them now. There might be some long waits once the episode hits.
