Hip hip hooray

Those for whom the pelvi-centric choreography of Fosse-trained Susan Streeter (San Pedro Playhouse's Cabaret) whetted an appetite have something to look forward to. San Antonio choreographer Gloria Liu will provide her take on Fosse-esque footwork for the Theatre Department at St. Phillip's College, when they stage Sweet Charity, conceived, choreographed, and directed on Broadway by the Man himself. St. Phillip's, home to one of the best large-scale performance spaces in town, is beginning to make a name for itself and its fledgling department, which started with three student majors in 1999. The latest crop, numbering more than 30, have garnered kudos for their alma mater, the most important being recognition by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival as a Regional ACTF Nominee. In a field that included universities and four-year colleges, St. Phillip's production of Macbeth was singled out for more than eight awards.

Sweet Charity, the well-known picaresque about a "dance hall girl with a heart of gold," plays March 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., March 28 at 2:30 p.m., and April 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Fine Arts Center Theatre at St. Philip's, 1801 Martin Luther King Drive. It is directed by Charles R. Jeffries, who heads the theater program. Call 531-4704 for reservations.

The Trinity University Department of Speech and Drama, in association with the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, is offering a free symposium, "The Young Professional Designer in a Changing Theatrical Landscape," at 7 p.m. on April 4 in the Jane and Arthur Stieren Theater, located in the Ruth Taylor Theater building on the TU campus. Professional designers (and TU alums) Heather Gilbert and Kelly Hanson, whose résumé credits include Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Lincoln Center Institute, are in town designing elements of TU's April production of the musical She Loves Me, and will conduct the symposium, which is open to the public. Reservations are not required.
