David Gilbert left Sustenio at the Eilan Hotel and Resort earlier this year, citing the desire to pursue other ventures. He’ll soon be back in the kitchen cooking foods closer to his heart – Asian street food. Gilbert is teaming up with the owners of the Friendly Spot, Steve and Jody Newman, on his new venture – Tuk Tuk Taproom. Together, the group will be bringing Asian fare and craft beers to Broadway. The restaurant and bar is scheduled to open sometime this summer.


If you’re interested in food legislation and issues, the Food Policy Council of San Antonio is holding the 2nd Annual Food Policy Conference right now at TriPoint Center on North St. Mary’s Street. The conference covers local food, community gardens and food policy. The conference runs through Friday, June 14 and will have tours of local gardens and farms on Saturday, June 15. Prices vary. The Alamo Drafthouse is now offering Silence of the Lambs-themed wines. The Cannibal is a chianti (presumably to pair with fava beans) and the Suit Yourself is a pinot grigio. The Drafthouse made some changes to its menu in the San Antonio locations, cutting out many entrees and sandwiches, and some moviegoers aren’t happy. Andrew Weissman’s brasserie, Minnie’s Tavern, opened a couple weeks ago where Boehler’s Bar and Grille resided, and the Liberty Bar before it. Minnie’s is striving for a true brasserie feel, with rillettes, pates, and frites all over the place. It’s a welcome sign for French food in San Antonio. I’ve been missing the casual French fare since Brasserie Pavil shut down. The first week, the seating was limited to a few reservations a day. The restaurant is currently open for lunch and dinner. Reservations are necessary – they are usually booked solid, although you can grab a drink at the bar without notice.

To the lady in line in front of me at Minnie’s Tavern on the last day of May – you thought you had a reservation, but I don’t get why you thought that. You left a message at Il Sogno and never got a call back, so you just showed up at the restaurant assuming you had a reservation. Do you leave messages at your dentist’s office and show up for a cleaning without confirmation? No? Then why did you do it at a restaurant? You should’ve gotten a call back, but people make mistakes (just like you did, you dummy). You should’ve called back to verify your reservation and you should’ve just accepted the situation with grace. Instead, you stomped away, shouting to the hostess and the kitchen that you were never coming back. I think I speak for everyone in the restaurant when I say, good riddance.
