It’s cheatin’ time

Frank Mumme’s The Other Woman, located on the edge of the historical Southeast neighborhood Highland Park, might have the best name of any bar in town — in part because of the intrigue of the “other woman” but also because of the pronunciation of Frank’s last name: “Mum-ee.” As in Egyptian. As for the story of the “other woman,” hold that thought …

On Saturday, September 1, The Other Woman provided a great assortment of diversions, including $2.50 well drinks, competitive karaoke, incredible taco-truck tacos, a customer secretly selling tamales, a birthday party, a badass at darts working incognito as the karaoke judge, and an uncommonly diverse crowd holding it all together.

Part of The Other Woman’s appeal is the excellent Tacos El Puerto truck, which is parked out front. This continues to be an excellent taco truck. Many first-timers in the group were impressed with the al-pastor tortas and the barbacoa tacos.

Inside, a high-stakes karaoke competition was blossoming. Early in the evening it became clear there were three divas in contention for first place: a Whitney Houston protégé, a Chicana Loretta Lynn crooner from Oklahoma, and a friend of the Houston protégé known best for her impressive baritone register. The high level of talent made us wonder if the trio were experts at hustling karaoke competitions across the Southwest.

Other customers occasionally took the mic to remind us what real karaoke is about: the drunken imperfections that bring everyone laughter, and occasionally, a rare glimpse into one’s hidden other side.

And who was the other woman? Evidently, Frank spent so much time working at his previous bar that his girlfriend thought he was having an affair. When he opened this bar, he named it for the woman who didn’t exist.
