Sometimes landscapes, dismissed as not heady enough or symbolic enough (or as too boring), get a bad rap. The truth of the matter is as it has always been: landscape painting, at least in the hands of the true masters of the form, can be just as inspiring, insightful and dynamic as any other style of painting. With its new exhibit, featuring over 25 exquisite landscapes by San Antonio native and impressionist hero Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922), the San Antonio Museum of Art presents active proof of the historic and artistic vitality of landscape painting. Entitled “Julian Onderdonk and the Texan Landscape,” the exhibit juxtaposes work from Onderdonk’s years training in New York, as well as his iconic depictions of the Texan landscape in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
