Moot

Sometimes you have to get a little distance from something to truly appreciate it. How else to explain the way British Invasion bands of the '60s seemed to value and understand the essence of American blues and rock 'n' roll so much more than kids who were raised in the music's back yard?

And how do you explain Moot Davis? A New Jersey kid with an impeccable ear for authentic honky-tonk music, Davis has seemingly cut through all the false starts and phony detours of contemporary country and honed in on the melancholy soul of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard. In fact, if you had to pick a current country singer to star in a Hank biopic (not that anyone could match the grit of tanning-bed casualty George Hamilton in the 1964 film, Your Cheatin' Heart), Davis would be the only logical choice.

After moving to Nashville in 2001, Davis caught the attention of former Dwight Yoakam guitarist Pete Anderson, who went on to produce Davis' self-titled 2004 debut album. Anderson's commitment to Davis' talent has also extended to participation in Davis' touring band, the Cool Deal, as lead guitarist and de-facto bandleader. With the tireless Davis winning converts on his so-called Tour That Never Ends, and his song "Whiskey Town" highlighting the soundtrack to the new film Crash, he might be on the brink of moving from insurgent-country cult status to genuine stardom.
