A week on the scene
Local house-music titan Eddie Spettro launched a monthly Saturday-night residency on July 23 at the Austin club Barcelona with a performance that also served as a birthday celebration for the DJ/producer. The debut of his Barcelona residency came on the heels of Spettro's highly successful European tour, which included stops in London, Manchester, Brighton, and Brussels, Belgium. ...
In other local news, veteran metal band Kalhalla recently inaugurated a music-and-video download site, which will provide live recordings, radio interviews and other rarities for free download at www.metal247.net. For fans anxious to sample an appetizer from the group's forthcoming self-titled album, the disc's first single, "Solitary Confinement," is also available at the site.
30 odd seconds to Mars
30 Seconds to Mars would be the next big thing if it wasn't for the press' fascination with the freak show that is actors-turned-rock-stars. Jordan Catalano - or Jared Leto as he goes by in the real world (Fight Club, Alexander) - heads up this quartet and, as a consequence, very little attention has been paid to the music he and his cohorts produce.
Sure, it's summarized, some praise is given, but it always comes back to him. When you think about it, though, can anyone name a member of Dogstar outside of Keanu Reeves? If you try to download a 30 Odd Foot of Grunts song, half of them will be listed under Russell Crowe.
What you need to know is this: Leto is a decent actor and he makes some unique role choices that run anti-Hollywood, but it's as a musician that he deserves to be remembered. 30 Seconds' latest, A Beautiful Lie, is a loud, experimental, and epic hybridization of industrial, prog, and modern alt-rock that expands on an accepted soundscape to create something that sounds huge. Not since The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars has an album sounded so intergalactic emanating from your speakers.
30 Seconds to Mars will be at Sunset Station on Wednesday, August 24 with The Used.
