Buttercup’s new album, Hot Love, won’t be available in stores until mid-April, but in the meantime the art-pop quartet plans to satiate the demand of impatient fans, one song at time. Beginning on Monday, January 23, the Cup is releasing a new song each week on singer/guitarist Erik Sanden’s answering machine. Eventually, Sanden’s phone line will allow listeners to hear all 12 album cuts, plus two bonus tracks not slated for release.
The strategy is a logical extension of Sanden’s Dial-a-Song series (itself an homage to the prolific spirit of They Might Be Giants), which ran from 1999-2002, and compelled him to write and record a new song every week. To hear Buttercup’s new material, call 738-2253 (PET-ABLE). Land lines are strongly recommended for a charming lo-fi experience. Cell-phone calls will likely result in a no-fi experience.
The San Antonio hip-hop community took baby steps towards unification on January 14 with the MLK Hip Hop Youth Summit held on the campus of St. Phillip’s College. Drawing more than 200 attendees, the event showcased the diversity of the hip-hop nation and revealed an abundance of colorful local entrepreneurs with product deviating from the underground back-packer rap formula. Academics including Bakari Kitwana, author of The Hip-Hop Generation, and Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, who recently penned The Political Action Handbook, dropped knowledge, and Houston rapper Slim Thug offered his own (often skewed) insights on politics, economics, and women.
Fresh off a 60 Minutes interview with Morley Safer, Kinky Friedman is taking on the aura of a serious independent challenger to Rick Perry in this year’s gubernatorial election (assuming he can secure those pesky petition signatures, of course). On Saturday, January 28, Friedman’s Bexar County campaign organizers will take their “Save Yourself For Kinky” petition drive to Casbeers, an appropriate setting, given the Kinkster’s renegade country roots. They’ll collect signatures at the club from 7-9 p.m., followed by a performance from Carolyn Wonderland.
