Rosario’s Mexican Restaurant is opening a second location on San Pedro sometime this fall. For those of us that love Rosario’s but hate First Friday crowds, this is welcome news. Johnny Hernandez opened a second location of the Fruteria at the Bush airport in Houston, and is planning a third in San Antonio this fall. Taco Taco Café will open a Trinity University location on campus sometime next academic year. All I want to know is why this didn’t happen when I was attending Trinity.
Typically, running and gyros go together about as well as swim meets and Thanksgiving dinner, but Papouli’s Greek Grill is combining food and fitness with a charity event. For their “Be a Hero – Get a Gyro” special on June 20, they’ll donate a portion of their sales to the Alzheimer’s Association. Also, if you sign up for the Race to Remember 5k (in September) at the restaurant, you will get a free gyro.
The Pearl Farmers Market is partnering with Cadillac for the Cadillac Café, a cooking demo area at the farmers market. Once a month, a chef will put on a cooking demonstration, presumably next to a brand-new Caddie. Chef Steven McHugh was the featured chef on June 8. He was the first executive chef at Lüke San Antonio, and future exec at Cured, slated to open in the fall at the Pearl Brewery.
The Southtown Farmers & Ranchers Market opened on Saturday, June 15 in the parking lot of the Blue Star Arts Complex. It’s open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., run by the same folks who brought us the farmers market at the Quarry. Vendors selling produce, fresh juices, and meats will be mainstays, along with some quirky products like dog treats and succulent plants.
Chef Jason Dady of Tre Trattoria, Bin 555, and Two Bros. BBQ and chef Jesse Perez of Midtown Arcade Kitchen are taking New York City by storm this weekend. Perez is cooking dinner at the James Beard House, the Beard Foundation showcase in NYC. Dady will be cooking at City Grit, a self-proclaimed culinary salon started by chef Sarah Simmons. By the looks of the menus for both events, Perez and Dady are bringing Texas game, chilies, and big, bold flavors to NYC. Good luck to both of them.
Goodbee’s Honey is now sold at H-E-Bs in San Antonio. Goodbee’s is raw honey sourced in Argentina and bottled in Round Rock. It’s also wildflower honey, meaning the bees get to roam different flowers.
The Vineyards Restaurant in Garden Ridge is closing on June 30. The local eatery has been open for 15 years. If that restaurant holds a special place in your heart, head out there before they close for good.
