The low-down on this week's premieres
Whether they're gluttons for truffles, Reese's Pieces, or good old-fashion fudge, candy lovers everywhere should get ready to sink their teeth into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a new rendition of the 1971 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder. When Charlie (Freddy Highmore, who reunites with Johnny Depp from Finding Neverland), wins a tour with legendary candymaker Willy Wonka (Depp) through the most amazing candy factory in the universe, anything can happen, especially with an army of Oompa-Loompas invited to the party. This is Depp and director Tim Burton's fourth film together, following Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow. The duo has also completed the animated fantasy Corpse Bride, which will haunt theaters later this year.
A great reason to require RSVPs for a wedding, Owen Wilson (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) and Vince Vaughn (Swingers) star in Wedding Crashers. Looking to meet elegible bachelorettes, John (Wilson) and Jeremy (Vaughn) create pseudonyms to attend strangers' weddings, hit on chicks, and drink free booze. But after John begins to fall in love with a wedding guest during one of their many marital schemes, he may not want to participate in the garter-belt toss ever again.
In the French comedy of errors Aprés Vous, a maître d' named Antoine (Daniel Auteuil) saves a stranger named Louis (José Garcia) from hanging himself and helps him recover from depression stemming from a recent breakup `see review, page 26`. But when Antoine learns more about the flower-shop owner that broke his new friend's heart, he begins to visit her business for something more than a bouquet of stargazers.
Staged like the TV show 24, Heights spans an entire day in the lives of five New Yorkers who cross paths `See review in this issue`. The film stars five-time Academy Award-nominated actress Glenn Close (The Natural), Elizabeth Banks (Catch Me If You Can), and Italian beauty Isabella Rossellini (Fearless).
