It really doesn’t get any more puro seafood than El 7 Mares, a 20-year Westside institution that proves you can get fresh seafood just down the street from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Come for the ceviche, but stay for the full-service bar while taking in your favorite Mexican soap opera or futbol game on the flat screen. Sip on a Martini Macho from the recently expanded bar with Don Julio Blanco, serrano, cucumber slices, mint and citrus juices, or stick with a michelada.
Come Friday nights, take in a cancion or two from the small band hopping from table to table asking for requests.
Bring the whole family, make it a girls’ night or make it a date night—El 7 Mares is a lot roomier than it seems, yet the digs aren’t going to distract you from the task at hand—sampling un poquito de todo. Oysters on the half-shell, bacon-wrapped shrimp and various levels of surf and turf make sure each diner has plenty to choose from. The tostada mixta comes loaded with fish ceviche, shrimp, octopus and crabmeat mixed with fresh pico and hot serrano peppers, but find room for the coctel a la campechana. Served in small, medium and large iterations, the offering has just about every sea creature under the sea, complete with Texas-sized oysters. That’s what the tableside Valentina is for.
