Snow in SA?
San Antonio hasn't had a significant snowfall in nearly 20 years, but Azúca, 713 S. Alamo, is simulating the winter experience with "Have a Christmas in the Caribbean" on December 3 at 7pm. There will be piles of snow in the outside dining area where guests can create snowmen. Snacks include graham crackers, oversize marshmallows, and Mexican chocolate. The event is free and part of First Friday festivities. Tropicante will provide the entertainment.
The restaurant, known for its Nuevo Latin cuisine, is also presenting a fashion show and light lunch on Sunday December 4 and 11. The show, featuring designs from Tootsie's, begins at 1pm, with an encore performance at 2. For information, call 225-5550.
It's not about race cars
W.D. Deli, 3123 Broadway hosts its drag brunch on Sunday, December 5. There will be shows at noon and 1:30pm.
Hill Country wine
Sixteen Hill Country wineries are participating in the Holiday Wine Trail on Saturday and Sunday, December 4-5. Visitors will receive an ornament at each winery to decorate a grapevine wreath. Lucinda Hutson, author of The Herb Garden Cookbook, will present "Holiday Entertaining from the Herb Garden," at Central Market on Thursday, December 2 from 6:30-9pm. The menu includes cranberry tequila punch, layered basil cheese torta with spicy sun-dried tomato and roasted red pepper salsa, pork tenderloin medallions stuffed with artichoke hearts, and mustard and mint marigold chicken with zesty honey mustard sauce.
A traditional Oaxacan Christmas is in store at Central Market, 4821 Broadway, Monday, December 6 from 6:30-9pm. Susana Trilling will demonstrate how to cook the culinary riches derived from this southern Mexican state. The menu will include shrimp balls in chile guajillo sauce, yellow mole with oyster mushrooms and pork, black bean rice, sweet and savory wilted greens, and Oaxacan chocolate cake with passion fruit mezcal sauce, and passion fruit ice.
