Once upon a time, suitcase-laden sedans swarmed west down Route 66 to Hollywood, carrying dreams of movie stardom along with extra socks and shoes. Some went east instead, chasing Broadway stage lights. But until YouTube, most aspiring actors hadn’t much of a chance unless they made it into a big-city acting class and showed the right stuff at the right time. Occasion and opportunity, sometimes it’s not at the end of the rainbow. Alamo City has floodlights, too.
This December, Overtime Theater presents James Hartz’ The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a tale that begins on Christmas Eve. George Moore’s household is brimming with food, festive adornments, and plenty of winter cheer. But when George’s estranged brother Billy shows up, the confrontation snaps the happy holiday mood like a broken gingerbread man. Plenty of lying, screaming, and violence ensue, reminding us why thoughts of impending holidays often bring an onslaught of depression to those with family obligations. The show is directed by Justin Laughlin and runs December 3-18. Auditions for the cast of eight will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, at the Overtime Theater (1414 S. Alamo, #103, in the Blue Star Arts Complex). For more info, visit theovertimetheater.org. Be sure to bring your headshot, resume, and excellent comic timing.
Not waiting for Christmas? Maybe Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), fits your mood instead. Centro Cultural Aztlan is accepting artist applications for this year’s exhibitions, running November 2-11. They have more artists’ and crafters’ opportunities coming up at Zonarte El Mercado de Aztlan (an arts and craft market) on November 18, 19 & 20. To apply for participation in either event, stop by 1800 Fredericksburg Road, #103, during the week or email Ruth Guajardo at email@example.com or call (210) 432-1896.
