WHOLLY COMMUNION
Main Street dance club Communion is planning a masssive electronica gathering with its Different Drum Synthpop Festival on September 5-6. Devoting itself to underground artists with a knack for applying songcraft to electronic textures, the weekend blowout features a heavy dose of vocalist-programmer duos, in the spirit of early Depeche Mode and New Order.
Featured acts include: Joy Electric, the brainchild of synth-music veteran Ronnie Martin; Leiahdorus, a collaboration between pianist Jason Smith and The Echoing Green's Joey B; Droom; Intuition; and New Clear Sky. The club's Main Room and Dark Lounge will also play host to local DJs Kavork, Boi of Doom and Dante's Prayer and Texas turntablists Sensoria, Acidevil, Sespis, Insect, and Apocalypse.

ORIGINAL SIN 13
Last week I took great delight in goofing on the August 29 Under A Blood Red Sky show at Sin 13, which I believed to be a tribute-band performance. Let's face it: The notion of a bar-band hack wearing a black derby hat, adopting a fake Irish brogue, and bellowing "Did I bug ya? Didn't mean to bug ya - Edge, play the blues!" is inherently funny.
As it turns out, though, Under A Blood Red Sky is not a U2 tribute band, but the name of a U2 tribute show - featuring U2 CDs and visuals. It might be a concept equally worthy of mockery, but it is a different beast altogether.
So I'd like to extend my apology to Sin 13 for poking fun at tribute bands when I should have been poking fun at tribute shows. My mistake, mea culpa, nobody's fault but mine, put the blame on me. You get the idea. •
