IT CAME FROM AVENUE D
Q: When exxxtreme rap group 2 Live Crew came to SA to be as nasty as they wanna be, who hosted the show?
A: Sin 13.
Q: When MC Paul Barman came to spit kick his Ivy League lyrics last year, whose stage held the diminutive dork?
A: Sin 13.
Q: Who, then, is responsible for inviting the intolerably trashy, ghetto booty girls known as Avenue D to SA on Saturday, August 9?
A: I think we all know the answer to this one.
Too bad the club closed a couple of weeks ago. And too good that the venue recently reopened - just in time to promote the electroclash lifestyle with a rousing appearance by underground sweethearts Avenue D, half-naked, hard-hitting innovators of a screaming sound that combines performance art punk with an electronic pulse, and dresses it up in cutting-edge costumery.
The NYC-based duo's renown precedes them, and hopefully will push SA's stylish out to the little club that could for some sexy electroclash. Sin 13 is located at 1902 McCullough at Ashby. Call 785-9461 for ticket prices.
There aren't many living jazz players who can match résumés with sax man Sam Rivers. A native of El Reno, Oklahoma, Rivers made his bow as a professional musician during a three-year naval stint, when he began playing with Jimmy Witherspoon. He went on to play sax for Billie Holiday, and showed his versatility by serving as musical director for blues titans like B.B. King and T-Bone Walker.
He briefly played with Miles Davis during the trumpet master's brilliant stretch of creativity in the mid-'60s. That led to work with legendary bassist Charles Mingus, and eventually, a four-year stint with Dizzy Gillespie from 1987-91. Perpetually assuming a supporting role for such heavyweights hasn't made Rivers a household name among casual music listeners, but his name has long been revered by jazz enthusiasts.
Rivers will bring his half-century of expertise to Carmens de la Calle Café on Saturday, August 9 for a concert that will also be recorded for a possible future release. Call 737-8272 for more information. •
