A week on the scene

Side one dummies

Fresh off a stint on the Vans Warped Tour, LA Latina-punk quartet Go Betty Go returns to town for a show with the Boston band Avoid One Thing.

As documented on Worst Enemy, Go Betty Go's five-song EP for the SideOneDummy label, the group suggests what the Go-Go's might have sounded like if they'd cut their teeth in Tecate, Mexico pool halls, and clung to their unkempt roots. On tunes like the kiss-off raver "It's Too Bad" and the Spanglish-punk anthem "Sin Mis Locuras," they simultaneously manage to be manic, melodic, angry, and exuberant. Avoid One Thing, their SideOneDummy labelmates, are fronted by bassist/singer Joe Gittleman, a veteran of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Gang Green.

Go Betty Go and Avoid One Thing are scheduled to perform at the Sanctuary (1818 N. Main) on Saturday, August 7. Call 732-0339 for more details.

Bright ideas

The August 2 show at Salon Mijangos by MV + EE Medicine Show served as a sampler of the duo's forthcoming album on San Antonio's underground label, Idea Records. MV + EE - consisting of Matthew Valentine and Erika Elder - brings together an inspired assortment of esoteric instrumentation: analog tone generator, autoharp, harmonium, ukulele, etc. A mix of avant-garde concepts with gutbucket Americana, the duo commonly blends blues drones with free-associative verses. MV + EE's Idea Records release, Ragas & Blues, should be available soon.
